Not everyone can defend themselves, and even fewer are actually allowed to do so. Nevertheless, there are many providers who offer and train this form of shooting, or what they consider it to be.
KL STRATEGIC has taken on this issue and developed the first officially recognized qualification for defense shooting instructors. Together with Alpha Security Consulting & Training, the pilot course “Instructor in Defense Shooting with Long and Short Weapons of All Kinds” took place from June 22 to June 29, 2019 in Schweinfurt.

KL STRATEGIC and Alpha Security Consulting & Training are not newcomers at SPARTANAT; we have already reported several times on various courses.
However, this eight-day full-time course was unique and took place this year for the first time at Waffen Albert in Schweinfurt.
In Germany, defense shooting is legally difficult to handle, as the legal requirements strictly regulate the execution and the circle of participants. Nevertheless, Khi Pa Landgraf has taken on the issue and developed a training concept to qualify professional instructors for defense shooting.
The goal here is clear: to establish professionalism comprehensively in the market and thus set a standard of quality for firearms training. The idea is not new, as there are similar qualifications already existing in the Anglo-American market. However, the new approach is to implement this training comprehensively and not only focus on the execution level but also start with the trainers. This concept requires much more knowledge and skills than just the handling and certain tactical basics. Topics such as weapons law with all associated legal regulations, teaching methodology, business aspects, and specialized first aid training are also included. In addition, regular training and further education are also part of the concept.
This comprehensive concept was developed over 1.5 years of development work and has not only convinced the approval authority, which officially recognized Khi Pa Landgraf as the only course provider in Germany, but also various other major figures in the instructor landscape, such as Peter and Simone Wolfsdorf from the company Blackfrog, Oliver Falk from HunTac, or H.E. from ACTS – HE and others who have already obtained the certificate as instructors in defense shooting through individual qualifications and exams.

Five participants successfully completed the exams to become instructors in defense shooting and received a certificate of passing the exams and the coveted, numbered, and hand-signed instructor patch that had motivated them throughout the course.
At the end of the course, the participants visibly showed the high demands placed on them and the high level of requirements that did not diminish during the eight days. Despite the high demands, there was still time for shared meals and conversations with the instructors, which contributed to the positive course and group dynamics.
This training marks the beginning of a continuous process of development and further education for the participants as well as the instructors. Although the certificate of passing the exam does not legally require ongoing education, annual training and further education for the instructors will ensure that the high, professional level is maintained and expanded. In addition to skills retention, additional training modules are also offered, e.g. for areas such as personal protection, vehicle training, medic, etc., which are carried out in cooperation with partners such as Blackfrog.
Following the motto that one never stops learning, instructors Khi Pa and Markus demonstrated that training is not finished when the participants leave, but that such a course must also be reviewed critically afterward. Therefore, the course process was optimized after the course, so that the next courses can offer additional modules in advance, such as weapons law and medic, allowing for an even more intensive focus on the nuances of defense shooting.
